Are people in Hawaii more friendly and relaxed?

Post by Winston »

It seems like it on TV anyway. But is it really easy to meet people and get dates in Hawaii, just because everyone's on vacation mood and trying to relax?

Any experiences there?

I went there in the 80's and it was really nice.

But in 2006 when I went there to meet Stefan on the Big Island, it was very dull and people were uptight and antisocial, just like in Seattle. I didn't know the Big Island would be like that. Who would want to live there if Oahu is more active and friendly?

I've heard mixed things about Hawaii. Theres supposed to be a lot of racism against white people. I think the limited job market causes this problem. On the plus side theres supposed to be lots of filipinas too, my friend met his filipina wife there.

I remember back in 1985, when I arrived in Hawaii at the airport, there was this beautiful Hawaiian woman who would greet every male passenger with a necklace of flowers and kiss him on the cheek too, making her lipstick mark on his cheek. It was a formal Hawaiian style greeting. And the wives didn't mind either.

How come they don't do that anymore? Did the US culture become too stuck up and uptight for that? How come it was ok back in the 80's?

Native Hawaiians are NOT friendly to whites at all. I remember going to Maui back in the mid 90s. I was out in the boonies and went into a convenience store. Definitely remember getting the cold shoulder from the store owners and checkout lady.

My good friend worked in Honolulu for 10 years and he hated living there for this very reason.

8) maybe it goes back to captan cook and some of the origanal white settlers there. The second language is japanese there and most things are
very pricey from what i remember. A foreign country like the pi or russia is probobly a better choice.

I have a relative that lives in Hawaii. It's expensive as hell there and the people suffer from "small island" mentality. Which is to say that unless you go in knowing the local scene and a bit of the local lingo you get treated a bit like an outsider. Plus Hawaii is a tourist destination so they are jaded as hell when it comes to everything.

I don't think the women are all that friendly either..just typical American women but with the additional small island mentality/regionalism stuff thrown in.

Most people in Hawaii are very nice folks. The Aloha Spirit is real, it is not something some guy in advertising dreamed up. Most tourists don't get that many opportunities to interact with large numbers of locals, with the exception of those who work in the hospitality industry & they are pretty likely to be hospitable. There is a segment of locals, who have a good sized chip on their shoulder & blame haoles for a long list of perceived wrongs, some are more real than others. If you wander too far off the beaten path, you could run into some of these guys. But if you stay away from beaches where local surfers hang, you aren't likely to have any run ins..

Thanks............

" So , you want to Live in Hawaii " by Polansky &a

I was actually thinking of moving to Kauai a few years ago .... Until I read this book .
It tells of all the good AND bad of relocating to Hawaii .
Very good , detailed and informative .
What I took away from it : If you're wealthy , you can separate yourself from all the racist , prejudiced , two-faced Hawaiian population , and have a decent life there .

Otherwise , you'll be forced to intermingle with this resentful bunch , facing daily ridicule , taunts , and threats , while your kids get beat up at school on a daily basis , just for being white . ( BTW - the word " Haole " is derogotory , - don't pretend otherwise )

I've only been to Waikiki twice , so I've only seen the watered down Hawaii .
That said , I've seen my share of resentfull tour guides , hotel staff , store owners etc.

The friendliest people I've met while in Hawaii were Japanese tourists , and I've shared many a drink , and half-assed conversation with them . VERY nice people !

I once knew a Tahitian woman , and her opinion about the subject was that the Hawaiians are lucky that white people value and appreciate their culture , while the French ( In her country ) constantly run them down , and try at every angle to colonize them , and change them .
" I rang'd the world , I cross'd the seas,
in hopes my restless breast to ease,
By pleasures yet unknown :

To all amusements I have run ,
that's found beneath the daily sun;
Till weary I have grown . "

Every person I have met from Hawaii was SO cool and fun to be around! They were very warm people, they were helpful, and they were kind to me. In fact, two of my roommates in collage were from Hawaii so they taught me how to cook rice, they taught me to take my shoes off and leave them at the door (that was new to me), and they taught me a bit about the culture.

And yes, native Hawaiians don't like white people as others have stated, and it baffles me when white people express anger that they are not accepted in Hawaii. I mean, after all the raping, killing, and stealing they have done (much more so than any other racial group!), they have the nerve to get mad that there are people today that are rightfully upset over what they were responsible for in the past.

If I had met any Hawaiians that were SO cool , and fun to be around , I might be living there now , But I didn't .

Being a middle aged man from nowhere Pennsylvania , I can say with all sincerity , that I have never raped a Hawaiian , killed a Hawaiian , or stole from a Hawaiian . For any Hawaiian to resent me for something that happened 150 - 200 years ago by someone else is just stupid .

I really don't even expect to be accepted in Hawaii ( even though it's part of the United States ) , just some common courtesy would be nice .

In his book , " The Happy Isles of Oceana " Paul Theroux describes Samoans and Hawaiians as " Thugish , thieving brutes " , and I can understand where he was coming from .

As for Hating on white people .... That's the IN thing right now for jealous , insecure people that are looking to blame someone else for their own faults and shortcomings .

You are Asian ancestry so you might fit in.

Hawaii is like visiting another country. They LOVE you when you are on holiday spending your money, but if you try to move there you will find out that the entire economy is run by and for Japanese immigrants and that there is NO WAY a white man can ever start a business there. Land costs are insane, taxes are beyond absurd, and the place is basically a Socialist Utopia. They actively discriminate against whites and if you move there you will lose all of your nest egg as they fleece you of every last cent.

Then add in the very odd body language that the locals exhibit when they meet you in public, in that they circle you just out of reach, sizing you up as though you are in the center of a circle, and you have a place that looks good on paper but in reality is not good at all.

Keep in mind that Hawaiians are descendants of Tahitians and other Polynesians who got lost.

Those cultures have a known and documented history of cannibalism that reached to the 1920's.

This is total bullshit.

Whenever I encounter Political Correctness, Critical Theory or Cultural Marxism, I drop the hammer.

Fallacy of Composition:

A fallacy of composition arises when one infers that something is true of the whole from the fact that it is true of some part of the whole.

E.G.
All of the rapists in Hawaii were white, therefore all whites are rapists and deserving of scorn.

Sorry, that's Bullshit.

I am not responsible for what someone did 150 years ago just because they might look a little bit like me.

Racism is Racism, no matter who propagates it.

How is it stupid? Why can't people have the right to be angry at another group of people if it's valid?

Because it isn't valid, it's racist and it's illogical.

Just because a group of a few thousand white men were assholes 150 years ago, does not mean that one can conclude that ALL white men are assholes, or that one can blame them all, even ones born 150 years later who were not even from the same country. Fallacy of Composition.

Racism is Racism, no matter if the person doing it is Hawaiian or otherwise.

You are arguing for Hawaiians to be pissed off at people from Iceland or Iran, when Iceland had ZERO affect, interest or impact upon Hawaii 150 years ago.

But people in Iceland are white, and the men in Iceland are White Men, so by your 'reasoning' Hawaiians have the right to be angry at them.
